The Mission
San Francisco

This project involved the restoration of 1875 Victorian Italianate house and the construction of a three-storey modern addition. The project was conceived of as an English or Dutch-style re-imagination of a historic urban structure: the architectural details of the original building were kept and restored in order to provide a strong contrast with the sleek modern detailing of the new building.

The house was designed to provide an optimal floor plan for the way in which people want to live today with living accommodation defined by three levels of floor-to-ceiling glass that completely retract to provide huge 15″ wide openings maximising indoor-outdoor flow. The entire first floor is devoted to living space with a succession of entertaining spaces: living room, formal dining and a true great room with 12′ high ceilings and a walk-out garden designed in a Japanese aesthetic.
